Zora - RIP

Zora was a “throw away” dog.  To her “owner” Zora was trash.  I have never seen a dog look like Zora in all of my life.  5 months ago Zora was a bag of bones.  She was rescued from a horrible situation.  She was not fed in weeks – no water – no human interaction – no wind/weather break, no blanket, no bedding.  Zora lived in an outside kennel with a cement floor and an igloo dog house.  But sadly, she had so much waste in her doghouse that she wouldn’t go into it anymore.  When it would rain, snow or sleet on Zora – she would literally freeze to the cement.  She would have to pull her poor body off of the freezing surface – and pulled her skin off while doing it.  She was simply waiting to die at the hands of her “owner” who couldn’t be bothered with her care.  This once beautiful, hard working, wonderfully trained police dog – had wasted away to almost nothing.

Rhonda rescued Zora and welcomed her into her home – and into her heart.  Zora was so emaciated that she could hardly lift her head and her body was literally curled in on itself – her only protection that kept her alive was to curl into a small ball and keep her internal organs as warm as she could.  Her poor skinny body had open sores, scars, bruises…   Rhonda could see beyond all of that.  She could see the beautiful soul that still shined bright out of those big sad brown eyes.   It was unknown if Zora would last through the first night because of the frost bite, dehydration, starvation that had caused her organs to begin shutting down – but she did live through the night.   Rhonda held Zora in her arms and hand fed her through those first few nights.  In the coming days and weeks Rhonda would cook liver, boiled chicken, rice… anything to put fat on Zora’s bones.  Her total focus was on Zora – and bringing her through this horrible life that she had lived before coming to live with Rhonda.   A warm place to sleep, a full tummy, gentle hands, quietly spoken words of encouragement – Zora thrived!

As time passed, Rhonda and Zora fell more and more in love with the life they had made together.  As Zora grew stronger – there were plenty of walks and off leash runs together.  Zora had perfect house manners – and Rhonda felt very safe knowing that Zora was watching over her as she slept.   And Zora felt very safe knowing that she had Rhonda to protect her from ever having to live the hell she had lived before.  Both Zora and Rhonda were happy and it seemed that the dark days had passed.  They pulled each other out of a hard winter – and looked forward to many happy years together.  They were absolutely dedicated to one another.

Sadly, on Monday, April 25th, Zora passed away due to an unfortunate accident at a boarding facility she had stayed at for one day.  Rhonda is absolutely devastated!!  Everyone that knew and loved Zora was stunned and heartbroken.  Both for the wonderful dog – as well as for our dear friend Rhonda.  Her loss is complete.  There are no words that can comfort Rhonda.

While we all know – time does heal.  We also know that when we lose a loved one – our lives are never the same again.  Zora was a bright and shining star – and our world has dimmed with her passing.  We believe that every tear that is shed for this girl – is a tribute to this wonderful creature that blessed this world for such a short time.  As a dog lover, we know that this was not “just a dog” – but a beloved  companion, a friend, a family member.   This dog had lived through such a tragic life –  she was no longer “trash” – she was no longer a “throw away” dog…  but at the end… Zora mattered.  Zora was loved.  Her life meant something.  And that is the best that any one of us could hope for!

RIP ZORA

Brandy - The Heinz 57 dog!!! ADOPTED!!! (Update below)

Brandy is a sweet young Heinz 57 in the truest form.  We have no idea what breeds are in there, but if there was such a thing as a sweetheart mix, she would be it!  She is only around a year and a half old, but has already had a litter of seven puppies.  We fixed that and she will no longer have the ability to have any more puppies.  She can now enjoy her young life playing with other dogs and soaking up as much attention as she possibly can from her people.  Brandy was never taught to properly socialize with other dogs so she takes a little time to warm up to them.  We are working on that with her and it doesn't take her near as long to decide to play, but she really needs to bond with that special someone and learn that they won't let anyone hurt her ever again.  She can even be hesitant at times if you go to grab her collar and will whine and gently mouth you while rolling on the ground.  We don't know what her life was like prior to getting her, but suffice it to say, it will only get better from here.  She is improving every day and does enjoy getting pet and loved on as much as possible.  She also really loves playing with the dogs in her foster home, and she can certainly run fast.  She would probably love to be an only dog or maybe just have one doggy companion to play with in her home.  She seems to enjoy the company of the male dogs in the house the most so if you would like one of each, Brandy may just be your girl.  Brandy is potty-trained and crate-trained as well as up to date on shots and spayed so all she needs now is the right home and family to call her own.  Update: she is doing good. slept by me all night. i am at store now buying her girlie collar. she loves watching the ducks and has made driends with li
ttle puppy next door. she rarely barks and came to me and put her front feet on me and whined to be let out this morning. he loves her walks and does qu
ite well. dick said she fell asleep on the patio watching the ducks and just woke up when i just called. she follows me everywhere. and loves on me alot
. put her head on dicks shoulder once. she listens to him but she is a mommys girl.
FWD: she laid her head on her pillow while i laid beside her for a long time thismorning kissing me

Lacy Lane - Shih Tzu

Lacy is a sweet sweet girl that enjoys the company of other dogs, of people, and even of cats. She likes to snooze the day away in the arms of her person - or on her own little bed. Lacy is 8 years old, housetrained, crate trained, walks gently on the leash, is spayed, up to date on normal vaccines (nincuding heartworm preventative and rabies vaccine). In short, she is the perfect little dog. She weighs about 13 lbs and is a sweet 8 year old love bug. Her Email julie.smith@odtr.org for an application!!

Jojo - the Lab mix puppy! ADOPTED!!!!

Please meet Jojo!! Jojo was tied to a pole behind a local business - abandoned, alone, scared. Poor Jojo was there for about 6 hours before someone finally called ODTR. One of our favorite volunteers immediately went to pick up this scared little pup (at about 10PM!!) and took her to her new foster home. We have started her on her puppy shots and she has been wormed. Jojo is a typical lab puppy. We are guessing that she is approx. 12 to 16 weeks old. She is playful, funny, smart and quick to learn. Jojo would love nothing more than to be someone's best friend. And to finally be able to trust this someone - that they won't abandon her just when he needs them the most!! ODTR will take good care of your best friend until you are ready for her. She will be loved - but HURRY UP!! The puppy fun has just started!!!!!

Ruby - Mini Dauchshund Mix - ADOPTED!!!!

Ruby is nothing but sweetness and puppy kisses. This is one really awesome dog - that needs a break!! Ruby was turned in (with her momma, brother, and sister) to a high kill shelter. One Dog at a Time Rescue took the pups (a doxy rescue took the momma) right away!!! Rubys sister and brother have found a home - but poor Ruby has been overlooked...This is one really fun little girl.  She loves to burrow into the pillows and "hide" - or if you have a blanket handy - that will be a hiding place too!!  But all you have to do is call her name - and she comes running for a hug!!  She is so gentle.  She loves her toys - but has never chewed on anything inappropriate.  Ruby is one of the most beautiful girls you will meet!  Her body has soft, shiny gray fur - but her feet, tail, ears, face are black.  She is just gorgeous!!!  I can't seem to get a good picture of her with that black face - but she is a real show stopper!!  Ruby is playful and energetic but loves nothing more than snuggle time with her favorite person. She is spayed, UTD on routine vaccinations, HW negative and on preventative, weighs 11 lbs.. She is working hard on her house manners - and is doing great!  She is crate trained and just lovely. Please think of Ruby when you choose your next best friend. She will spend the rest of her life making great memories with you!!!

Roscoe is still here!!!

Roscoe is a beautiful Husky/Bernese Mountain Dog mix - full of playful fun and happiness.  Roscoe was rescued from a high kill shelter - and has truly learned that life is so much better than what he could remember!  Roscoe spends his days with his dog buddies, living the life of a pampered boy.  He has a terrific foster family that love Roscoe very much.  He has a fenced in yard to play in - and that is MUST with our dear Roscoe.  He has fun energy - and loves to run and play.  But, he also enjoys cuddle and snuggle time just as much.  Roscoe would do best in a home with a dog companion - and no cats.  They fascinate him - a little too much.  :)  Please think of Roscoe when you choose your new best friend.  He will fit the bill  nicely!!!

Please meet Ally! ADOPTED!!! (Update)

We believe beautiful Miss Ally is a German Shepherd/Husky mix young girl. She is house broken, crate trained, UTD on vaccinations, and spayed. She is currently living in foster care where she is working on her basic obedience commands. She is a wonderful girl with kids and other dogs, and Ally does just fine with cats. If you'd like to make Ally a part of your family, Update: Ally is doing wonderful...she is a very sweet girl.  My cats still haven't warmed up to her, but I have one that is getting a little braver each day and another that is trying to follow her lead, but not with as much success.  The third one still hasn't come out of hiding.  I have found Ally is a cuddler when she is not in play mode.  She has already made friends with the associates at Pet Smart...one associate was introducing her to everyone.
I think I've worn her out this morning...we went a nice long walk to get her used to the neighborhood and then we played tug-of-war with one of her new toys...she is zonked out right now.  Thank you so much for letting me adopt her...she is a great addition to my family!

Please help Tiny!! - ADOPTED!!!

Tiny is just a puppy. Some days Tiny is able to play and roam his yard, chase his buddies, watch the winter turn to spring with longing of warm days in the sun! But there are more and more days that Tiny wakes up in the morning – and he hurts so badly that he cries out loud. His foster momma will help Tiny walk slowly and painfully into the kitchen where he is made comfortable in a warm pile of blankets so that he can watch the children in his foster home prepare for their school day. He lays quietly while he watches the other dogs run and play and wrestle with the children’s socks. Tiny’s big eyes brighten with excitement when someone comes near enough to gently touch his big head or give him a quick snuggle. Sometimes he can see a piece of toast hit the floor and watches quietly as one of the other dogs in the house swoops in to grab that morsel of food – and Tiny sighs. Tiny wants to get up and join in the chaos and he will attempt it… but it hurts so much. Later in the morning when things calm down a little bit and his pain meds kick in, Tiny will heave his soft body up off of the floor, take a few painful steps, stretch his sore muscles and slowly walk over to his foster momma and rest his large head on her lap – his gentle brown eyes will search hers – as if asking “WHY can’t I play like the other dogs in this house? Why does it seem like my life is over – instead of just beginning? I haven’t lived very long – is this really what life is about? Is it supposed to hurt this bad?” They will continue to stare at one another – while his foster momma hugs him and reassures him, “Tiny, I promise your life will not always be like this. You have an army of people fighting to help you. Please don’t give up. You ARE loved.” If tears really could heal – the tears his foster momma sheds would make things so much better for sweet Tiny. And while Tiny can feel the love of his foster and rescue family – Tiny wants nothing more than to run and play – PAIN FREE.

Tiny is a Great Pyrenees/Yellow Lab mix –he weighs 82 lbs and is only 10 months old. He is currently in rescue and is waiting to be adopted to a forever family of his very own. Please help us give this big baby the much needed hip dysplasia surgery that will give him the pain free life that most puppies and the people that love them take for granted.

Tiny wants to eat scraps of toast found on the floor, chase butterfly’s in the yard, and play tug with his children’s socks!! Please help One Dog at a Time Rescue in Warsaw, Indiana provide this puppy with everything he needs to be happy and live the rest of his life without pain. It shouldn’t hurt to play like a puppy – when you are just a puppy!

Please donate to the Help Tiny Fund. Any amount you donate will give our sweet boy the relief he so desperately needs.

UPDATE!!!

How small does a dog have to be, to be considered a puppy? 3 lbs? 15 lbs? How about 85 lbs!!? That’s what Tiny weighs at just 11 months of age. He is all long legs and big curiosity! But, unfortunately, due to the luck of the draw – this puppy also has severe hip dysplasia and is unlike most puppies you might know. Tiny is slow to get started in the morning. He will finally get up and romp and play gently with his foster brother and sisters. But, Tiny gets so very sore if he plays too roughly or for an extended period. He will come and lay down beside his foster momma and watch the other dogs in the house play and frolic with ease. You can see in his sad puppy eyes that he wishes he could play as hard as the others – but, already in his young life, Tiny knows he has limits. Our gentle giant (Golden/Lab/ Great Pyrenees) has SEVERE HIP DISPLASIA in both hips and mild arthritis. This sweet boy is basically living in an old dog’s body, with the spirit and spunk of the sweet puppy that he is!! Since my first email to let you know about Tiny’s issues – ODTR and Tiny have been very, very busy!! Tiny has been seen by three different veterinarians and specialists – and they all agree on one very important thing! TINY IS AN AMAZING AND WONDERFUL DOG!!! But, while some think that surgery could be the answer for Tiny’s dysplasia, another local and very respected veterinarian believes that Tiny is an excellent candidate for physical therapy and pain management therapy instead of surgery. Due to his young age and the fact that this is not a NEW development – Tiny was born this way!!! … She believes that he would do WELL with this treatment. It is strongly believed that while Tiny will always be a “special needs” kind of guy (due to his daily meds) – he can live a very long, healthy, relatively pain free life!!! That is what we want for our boy!!! One Dog at a Time Rescue and Tiny have had a POURING OUT of well wishes, offers of prayer, and donations – and because of those very things… we have been able to do everything in our power to assure ourselves (and Tiny – and potential adopters) that Tiny is going to be OK!!!! We are so thankful for the kindness and generosity that we have received on behalf of our very special young dog. Your generous donations have gone to the extraordinary veterinary care that Tiny has received. From expert consultations, x-rays, to blood tests, to laser therapy (starting next week), to medications – Tiny has received TOP NOTCH care! THANK YOU for playing a part in this!!! But our work is not done!! Tiny will continue to need his special medications and hopefully we will be able to continue offering him the therapy (whether physical therapy or laser therapy) that he would benefit from until he is safely placed in his forever home – and his new family can take over his care When Tiny finally meets his new family and settles in – One Dog at a Time Rescue will settle a new dog into Tiny’s place. We have set up an emergency medical fund called “The Tiny Medical Fund” in honor of our first “special” dog – and with continued donations we will be able to help other dogs with veterinary assistance due to medical issues that may have caused them to be euthanized without the help and care that ODTR and our generous friends could provide. One Dog at a Time Rescue is working hard to provide the care and help our special foster dogs need to become loving, healthy, and happy members of a family. Please help us by donating to The Tiny Medical Fund. Your help, generosity, and kindness will be greatly rewarded simply by knowing – YOU have made a difference in a dog’s life. YOU have been directly responsible for SAVING a dog’s life. YOU have rescued a dog from the life of sickness, pain, disease… and death.

HONEY! The Pure Bred St. Bernard!!!!!! ADOPTED!!!

Please meet Honeypie Sugar Bum – the dry mouth St. Bernard.  Honey comes to us from a very busy family that just can’t give her the time and attention that Honey wants so badly.  Honey has lived outside in a warm kennel her whole life.  But One Dog at a Time Rescue is committed to finding that perfect family that wants this precious girl inside their hearts – as well as their home.  Honey is a smart girl and will learn house manners quickly, with patience and guidance – she will be your perfect companion and friend.  Honey is 2 years old, weighs about 130 lbs and will be spayed and heart worm tested and on preventative, UTD on her rabies vaccination – and preloved before adoption.  Ready for a new life as in indoor/outdoor pampered pooch.  She has those big kind brown St. Bernard eyes that you could fall right into.  She is a beautiful, beautiful girl. (her adoption fee is $150)  UPDATE:  Honey is heartworm positive.  :(  She is currently going through HW treatment and will be available for adoption when that is complete.  Estimated availability date: June 2011

Rudy - Schnauzer/Terrier mix (ADOPTED!!)

Rudy is a sweet sweet 6 year old boy that has had a rough life. He was kept in a cage that was so small – he couldn’t even turn around! He spent every day, every night in that cage for months with very little relief! Why? Because his human companions were getting a divorce and couldn’t be bothered to take care of this tiny little boy anymore. Rudy was confused, scared, alone, and so sad. He has memories of being someone’s beloved family member at some point in his life – and you can tell that he is anxious to repeat that experience. This boy has beautiful house manners. He is neutered and UTD on all of his vaccines, plays well with other dogs and children… he is just a really good dog. ODTR couldn’t stand the thought of Rudy living in that cage anymore. He hasn’t given up – he has only blossomed and shines even brighter since his rescue. Rudy is a sweet 11 lbs love bug that needs a companion that is home most of the day. He will repay you with all of the tender love and companionship you could ever dream of.

Milo - Lhasa Apso - ADOPTED!!!!

Please meet MILO!!  Milo is a full blooded lhasa apso neutered male.  Milo is 9 years old and has lived his entire life as a cherished friend and family member to a wonderful couple.  Recently, Milo has decided that he needs a full time companion and doesn't want to be alone on that 8 to 5 schedule anymore.   Milo is starting to experience some seperation anxiety and we really want to help this gorgeous, well mannered little guy find JUST the right situation for his needs.  Milo weighs about 26 lbs, he is fluffy and soft, he knows some obedience, he is fully house trained, he loves to go bye bye (especially if there is a stop for ice cream in the plans!).  Milo has had run of the house while home alone for MANY years - he is very trustworthy!  He just really doesn't want to be alone so much.  If you can help provide Milo with a companion for most of the day (and all of the night!) - please consider this little dog.  You will not be disappointed in your choice of a new best friend.  This is one really fabulous dog!!!

February 15, 2011

Missy - Italian Greyhound/Chihuahua mix - ADOPTED!!!!!

Missy is a beautiful Iggy mix that weighs 11 lbs and is about 2 years old.  She was a stray that found her way to a loving family – but sadly, due to situations beyond their control, they could not keep this sweet little dog.  Missy doesn’t seem to have any bad habits.  She is house trained, polite, calm, sweet natured.  Missy is spayed and UTD on her vaccinations.  She plays well with the other dogs in her foster home – and seems to be gentle, if curious, about the cat.  She is a little on the thin side – but we are working on changing that!  She is a cuddle bug, hot water bottle.  I honestly think this girl looks like a baby deer.  I call her my deer dog!  She has the Italian greyhound body and personality.  However, she is not as fragile as the Iggy breed.  I do think she is a perfect combination.  I know that you would love her!

Leny - Full Blooded German Shepherd Dog! (RESCUED!)

Leny is a gorgeous full blooded GSD full of love and hope for a bright future. She has had a struggle in her life. Leny has not done anything wrong to cause her to be without her own home. She is loyal, generous, young, willing to love and forgive her past. She would like a home with a large male dog to play with. She would be a loyal protector. She will enjoy more training and socialization. However, leny is a great dog and she is ready for a home of her own. Please consider this girl... she is so deserving of the GREAT FUTURE we have hoped for!!!  UPDATE! Leny is going to finish her time in foster with Southwestern Michigan GSD Rescue.  She is a special dog that has won the hearts of all of ODTR.  We wish her the very best - and look forward to her updates!!

Itsy - our Aussie/Great Pyranese mix - ADOPTED!!!!

Itsy is an Australian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix.  She is a really sweet dog that loves and bonds with her “person” very quickly and completely.  She loves children and other dogs and has very nice house manners.  Itsy is an owner surrender from a family that wanted to get her into a new home because the neighbors were threatening to kill her.  ODTR has fallen in love with this girl – and she is safe.  Itsy is spayed and UTD on her shots.  We think Itsy needs to be adopted by a family that is home most of the time.  She has some separation anxiety – and wants to be with a companion as much as possible.  She is only 2 years old, weighs 50 lbs (she needs to gain 10), and is looking for a full life of love and happiness.

Newman - Our NEWFY update

A happy ending for our puppy Newman!!  This is his new family who are tickled to death to have this sweet puppy in their arms - and in their lives.  :)  GOOD LUCK NEWMAN!!!!

Tank - The Staffy headed to FLORIDA!!!

I wanted to take a quick moment to tell you something really exciting and interesting that happened late last week.  One of our co-founders/volunteers, April (many of you know her), is our PIT BULL queen!  J She has a terrific heart for pit bulls in our community.  Many, many are put to sleep simply because they are misunderstood and not cared for (neutered/spayed) as they should be!!  April met a wonderful Staffordshire terrier at our favorite animal shelter (HI SHERRY!) – and could not turn away from him.  He is a big, strong, healthy, alert, happy pit bull who had been turned into a shelter with the very great possibility of death!!  April has no room in her own home for another staffy – so she began the task to find a home (and FAST) for this great guy.  She placed an ad on her Facebook page and other sites asking if anyone wanted to adopt TANK!! – and immediately a family from Ft. Lauderdale, FL said “ME ME ME!!!!” – and April went into overdrive!  How do we get this great dog from Warsaw, IN – all the way to Florida?!?!  We immediately contacted one of our favorite dog transports (May Heckman, with Minnesota Boxer Rescue - www.mnboxerrescue.org) who put us into contact with another transport (Kathy Smola –www.whitepawsgsr.com/) who said “Yes!  I will transport this dog!!” – but before we could commit “TANK” to transport we had some work to do.  April took Tank to be neutered and UTD on all of his vaccines.  We do NOT send a dog to his forever without being altered and UTD!  THEN, she had to figure out how to get a HOME VISIT worked out all the way in Florida.  A home visit is critical – especially with the distance and the breed!!  We knew we wanted someone impartial to go to this home and make sure that Tank would not be put into a position where he would suffer or be neglected in any way!  This is where it takes an interesting twist!!  The transport (Kathy Smola)put our “home visit” need on a website – and April immediately had about 10 people call or email her.  They said they would LOVE to take their time, their gas – and go to a strangers home for a stranger in Warsaw, IN… for a PITBULL!!  These people don’t know us – but these wonderful people wanted to do ANYTHING that was needed to be done to save another really great dog.  So, the prospective adopters had a visit from a stranger and her dog – and answered a lot of probing questions.  The home visitor came away from the visit with a grade card (A+) and a smile.  So, the long of the short – Tank is headed to Florida next week!!!  What an amazing country we live in.  People from all over the USA are JUST as committed to rescuing good animals as we are!!!  And, rescuing good animals is not as easy as you would think it is.  But these strangers made it easier and successful!  ODTR will be putting our name on that website and will volunteer to do home visits too!  We ALL have to do what we can do!!!  April is just thrilled and so are we!  TANK gets the best life! Living in Florida on a beach… sounds pretty good right now doesn’t it?  J
UPDATE!
Then on to downtown Indy with our Big Tank.  Meeting the first leg of Tank’s transport to Florida was a sweet moment.  Here was this wonderful woman who had never met us – or Tank – sitting in the cold blowing snow waiting for a PIT BULL!  She got out of her SUV and immediately she smiled at our sweet boy and bent down to get bully kisses.  She took him by the lead and walked him in the deep snow (yuck) and made sure he had a potty break before loading him up to make the long drive south.  Every 2 to 3 hours I got an email telling me where Tank was and how he was behaving (always perfectly).  It was decided not to crate Tank for the long trip – to help with the travel soreness that we all get when cooped up for too long.  Tank was sitting beside or behind the driver – relaxed and as happy as a boy could be.  Also, Tank was the only dog in the transport (until later in the day when they picked up 2 smaller dogs who hitchhiked their way down south too!).  Every person that signed up for the transport did so out of the kindness of their heart.  Each person on this “underground railroad” spent their own gas, their own time – for a dog that they knew was living his final chance in life.  They knew that Tank was at a high kill shelter – and they knew that pits are not adopted easily due to their bad press.  Many of the people on this transport had never transported a pit bull – yet not one person hesitated or balked at the fact that our bully was uncrated!!  Every couple of hours I got email that said, “I love this dog!” – or, “I had a hard time not kidnapping Tank!”  Tank even had a slumber party late Saturday night!!  A stranger opened their home for this overnight guest from Indiana.  They fed and played and worked out his kinks from the long day of travel.  He got lots of hugs and kisses – and back rubs before turning in for the night to prepare for another long day.  Sunday morning dawned NOT quite as early for Tank – and a little bit warmer too.  But he had no less love and enthusiasm for the next leg of transport… and the next… and the next.  All in all – Tank met, loved, changed the lives of about 20 new friends that dedicated part of their weekend to making sure our boy made it to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Some said they cried when they drove away from him.  Tank is a beautiful dog and a sweet, sweet soul.  I wish you could have ALL met him before he moved to Florida and into the arms of his new Best Friend, Jimmy!!!  What an honor and privilege to be a small part of Tank’s journey.  He is a beautiful, gentle, kind hearted tank of a dog.  My life has been changed because of the kindness of complete strangers.  Working in rescue can harden a person’s heart.  But meeting all of these wonderful people really did restore my spirit and faith.   God Bless you Tank!  You deserve this!!!  And best wishes to Jimmy in his wonderful and long life with Tank.  And a VERY SPECIAL thank you to everyone that had a part in this rescue.  From the sweet lady that volunteered to do a home visit – to every person that took Tank to the next part of the transport… Thank you.  Thank you so very much.

Chester - Daushchund/Puggle mix - ADOPTED!!!

Please meet Chester… the wiener mix.  This little boy is… well… little.  He weighs about 3 lbs at 9 weeks – which makes us believe he won’t be much bigger than 10 lbs as an adult (we have been surprised before!).  Chester is a lover bug.  He’s all about the snuggle.  But he also enjoys playing gently with the older dogs in his foster mom’s house.  He is learning house manners – but because he gets so cold outside…he is using puppy pads.  And he is doing REALLY well!!!  Chester looks a lot like a beagle/pug in the face (we know his daddy! Remember Ollie??? – and he was a puggle) with a little bit of a longer body of the dauchsand.  He’s just adorable.  He won’t be around long! You’d better apply FAST!!

Piper - Australian Shepherd/Mix - ADOPTED!!!!

Meet Piper! Piper is a 9 week old aussie mix puppy. She was left in the night drop box of a high kill shelter in the deadly cold of winter. ODTR was called to save this beautiful baby girl. Now Piper is learning what it means to have a warm bed, food, and all the love a great little girl like this deserves. Piper gets alog great with other dogs and kids. She has been wormed and will be receiving her first puppy shots.

Kody - Lab Mix - ADOPTED!!!

Meet Kody! Kody is a lab mix puppy. Kodys owner contacted on ODTR team member stating "If you don't come get this pup and his mom I'm gonna take them to the woods and shoot them both!" NO! They are now safe in the care of ODTR!!  Kody and his momma (Brandy) are learning what it's like to have love, food, and a warm place to sleep every night. Some of which they'd never known until now. Kody is just turning 8 weeks old and is now able to leave his mother's care. He is such a fun loving playful little boy! He has been wormed and is UTD on his puppy vaccinations. Wouldn't you love to give his little guy a forever home?
UPDATE:
Rising at 5AM for a 2.5 hour trip to Indy was painful on my old bones.  Kody woke right up of course, and wanted to play and wake up the whole family – which he was very successful at.  I had to laugh – it really was cute.  It also made it easier for my little dogs and husband to say goodbye to our sweet houseguest.  J  We arrived at our meeting spot a little late due to the ridiculous snow (can you tell that I am absolutely sick of winter?!?), but met Kodi’s adoptive mom at 9AM.  I love to see their faces when they get to meet their new furry family member… and this one was just as sweet as any.  Kody jumped into her arms just like he had always been there.  Those moments tug at my heart and make me so happy/sad at the same time.  But when I watched that sweet pup wiggle and try to kiss her and go play at the same time… it really was a priceless moment for me.  This is the adoptive families first comments:   “Kodi is doing GREAT. He never had an accident inside the house. He has let us know each time he needs to go. He slept thru the nite. He wore my daughter out & my daughter wore him out.”  I am looking forward to more updates.  I still miss my little Kodi Monster – but being able to see the beautiful picture of him with his new little girl… sure helps!  J

Riley- Basenji Mix - ADOPTED!!

Say hello to Riley!  Riley is a 9 month old Basenji mix (again, just an educated guess on his breed) who was surrendered to our favorite shelter! The shelter contact ODTR to save this sweet little guy.,,. and SWEET he is! Riley loves to lay on your lap, cuddle in your bed and follows you everywhere you go! We don’t know why this perfect dog ended up at a high kill animal shelter – but we do know that he will only know love for the REST of his life.  Riley is neutered, housebroken, UTD on vaccinations, and ready to go! Riley LOVES kids and other dogs. He would make the perfect family pet. Can he please be yours?  Update:  Riley has been adopted into a sweet family that is looking forward to a perfect life... and Riley couldn't be in better or more loving hands.  CONGRATULATIONS RILEY!!!

Paco - Chihuahua - ADOPTED!!!!!

Paco is a sweet little man.  This 5 lb dog was found as a stray and taken to a high kill shelter.  The shelter staff completely fell in love with Paco and asked for our help.  Paco is 4 years old , and wants nothing more than to lay on your lap and snooze the day away.  He would be perfect for a retired family or person that spends a lot of time at home.  He seems to travel well also.  Paco will never have the high energy of a younger dog, he won’t beg to play with toys or wake you up in the middle of the night for attention.  But Paco will look you in the eyes and melt your heart. He’s such a sweet boy.  He is housetrained (but must be on a strict potty schedule – because he is tiny!!), and will be UTD on his shots before adoption.  Paco is not neutered – and our vet doesn’t recommend it at his age/weight.  Paco does not mark in his foster home.  We think Paco is pretty great – and I truly believe you would too!

Roscoe - Bernese Mountain Dog/Husky Mix

Roscoe is our Bernese Mountain Dog/Husky mix weighing in at 65 lbs.  We are only guessing at his heritage – because Roscoe came to us from a high kill shelter.  This great boy has so much personality!  He loves, loves, loves everyone and every dog he meets!  He is up for some fun and he also loves to cuddle.  Roscoe is housetrained, crate trained, neutered, UTD on shots – he is the perfect companion to dog buddies and home buddies alike.  Some dogs just have personality PLUS – and that is our sweet Roscoe.  When you meet this big boy – your first comment is “OH!  He is GORGEOUS!”  and then you will see beyond his looks to his fun personality.  Everyone is a friend and potential playmate.  Roscoe LOVES to be outdoors – but we will only adopt him as an indoor family dog.  He LIVES for companionship (although he does well on his own).  You would never be lonely with Roscoe around.

Tiny Tunes - Great Pyrenees/Lab - ADOPTED!!!

Tiny Tunes is a Lab/Great Pyrenees mix, 8 month old male.  Tiny comes from a family that loved him very much but realized that he was more dog than they were able to take care of after his foster momma fell and broke some bones (not due to anything with Tiny).  He’s a really smart boy who is eager to learn and eager to please.  Tiny already weighs a little over 100 lbs and still has some growing to do.  This guy loves other dogs, children – just about anything you put in front of him – he loves LIFE!  Tiny is neutered, UTD on all shots, housebroken – and perfect.  What a lover bug!!

Freddy and Sissy - Bonded Rat Terriers

Freddy and Sissy are a bonded pair of 8 year old Rat Terriers.   These two dogs are so sweet!!  I have enjoyed getting to know them.  They were turned over to a high kill shelter when their owners decided to move and not take these two adorable kids with them.  ??  They are housebroken and neutered and spayed.  We will make sure they UTD on their shots before adoption.  Right now these two are learning to adjust in a new world – since theirs has turned upside down.  Freddy (white face)still seems a bit sad… always looking for something or someone.  He is beginning to understand that THIS is his new life and his former owners are not coming back.  It’s sad for his foster momma to see – but she continue to encourage him to let go and be happy.  It’s working.  Sissy is a happy go lucky little girl and thinks life is pretty OK where she is now.  Both are eating well and there is not one thing wrong with their house manners.  They are perfect house guests.  But they really need a home of their own.  Sissy weighs approximately 20 lbs and Freddy is a little smaller, weighing approximately 15 lbs.  Both are healthy and ready to spend the rest of their lives keeping their new companions perfect company!

Brandy - Catahoula Mix - ADOPTED!!!!

Please meet Brandy.  Brandy is a 1 year old mix (Catahoula??) and weighs 55 lbs.   She is a gorgeous brindle girl who is nothing but sweet and gentle.  We were told to “Take Brandy and her pups (she had 7 of them!) today or I will take them into the woods and shoot them.”  Of course we immediately found homes for every one of the sweet little pups – but Brandy was left vulnerable.  We couldn’t stand the thought of this sweet dog looking into the eyes of her owner – while he pointed a gun at her and shot her to death.    What a horrible life she has lived!!  She is now safe with ODTR.  Brandy is so forgiving and willing to love.  She is a very optimistic young girl and is ready to have fun!  She doesn’t seem to have any issues at all.  Amazing!!!  She is being housebroken, she will be UTD on her vaccinations, and spayed before adoption.  She is a really wonderful dog.  She has touched and broken all of our hearts.  She deserves better.
